Is it possible to bruise someones sternum?

or ribs during CPR? I have done CPR on my best friend recently and she told me later after being examed by the emergency room doctor and having chest x-rays that her sternum and three ribs were bruised,how is that possible?Is there any way I can avoid injuring someone's chest if I have to do CPR again?
